Besse SAUER dies at 84; veteran Fairfield educator

Besse Ellen SAUER, 84, who devoted much of her life to education died at 6:30 a.m. today at the Jefferson County Hospital.

Mrs. SAUER taught for 48 years in Jefferson County, 44 of those years in Fairfield and 20 years as principal of Roosevelt School.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Charles Kincaid will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Raymond Funeral Home. Memorials have been established to the First Christian Church and the Fairfield Public Library.

Mrs. SAUER began her career in 1917 at Cross Lanes school west of Fairfield. The next two years she taught in Center Township before joining the Fairfield School District in 1920.

She was a member of the first staff at Roosevelt School when the building was opened in 1923. Her career was interrupted by the depression in 1936 when the school board adopted a policy of employed only unmarried teachers. She returned to regular teaching in 1942 and in 1949 was named principal at Roosevelt School, a position she held until her retirement in June, 1969.

Mrs. SAUER also taught at Lincoln, Logan and Central elementar (sic) schools in Fairfield.

Following her retirement Mrs. SAUER served as chairman of the Living Memorials for the Jefferson County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. SAUER was born July 17, 1898, in Trenton, Mo. She was the daughter of Harlie T. and Lue Ellen BELSHE BAUGHER.

The family moved to Fairfield in 1916 and she graduated from Fairfield High School in 1917.

She received her BA degree from Parsons College and MA degree from the University of Iowa.

She was married Aug. 31, 1918, to Daniel SAUER. He preceded her in death May 27, 1960.

Mrs. SAUER was a member of the First Christian Church, TTT, Delta Kappa Gamma. Legion Auxiliary and the national, state and local Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by nephews and a niece. Two brothers and a sister are deceased.
