Genevieve ALTENHOFEN

Genevieve ALTENHOFEN, 71, of Chariton died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Sunday, April 29, 2012.

The funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton.

A rosary is at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton.

Survivors include her husband, Ron of Chariton; one son, Paul ALTENHOFEN of Englewood, Colo.; one daughter, Angela ALTENHOFEN of Chicago; two sisters, Irene REDEKER SHULTZ of Lacona and Jane REDEKER of Eldon; and one brother, Francis "Frank" REDEKER of Fairfield.

Genevieve Rose REDEKER ALTENHOFEN

Genevieve Rose REDEKER ALTENHOFEN, 71, of Chariton died April 29, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

The funeral was held Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton with the Rev. Christopher Piscut officiating. Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery in Chariton.

Visitation was Friday at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.fieldingfuneralhomes.com.

Mrs. ALTENHOFEN was born on April 5, 1941, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Francis and Ruth KUPKA REDEKER. She married Ronald ALTENHOFEN Feb. 23, 1963.

She graduated from Washington High School and attended Parsons College in Fairfield, where she earned her bachelor's degree in home economics. She moved to Chariton in 1962 to become the Lucas County Extension Service home economist, a position she held for four years.

Mrs. ALTENHOFEN taught English literature at Chariton Community High School for 35 years, beginning in 1966. Her students nominated her for the Golden Apple Award for Teacher of the Year.

She earned a master's degree in English literature from the University of Iowa.

In her free time, she loved reading, tending her garden and creating crocheted, embroidered and needle point works of art.

Survivors include her husband; one son Paul ALTENHOFEN and wife Jeannette Englewood, Colo. and one daughter Angela ALTENHOFEN of Chicago; two grandchildren; two sisters Ruth Irene REDEKER SHULTZ and Jane REDEKER DAVIS; and one brother Francis REDEKER.
