Quentin R. BATES, 93, of Bethesda, Md., a native of Fairfield, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda due to multiple health problems.
A private interment was held. Pumphrey's Bethesda-Chevy Chase Funeral Home in Bethesda was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. BATES was born March 28, 1919, in Fairfield. He married Madelyn DOUGHERTY 51 years ago.
He was a graduate of Parsons College and was a Littauer Fellow at Harvard University in 1949-50. He joined the Medical Detachment of the 133rd Infantry of the Iowa National Guard in 1938 and was on the first U. S. transport ship to land in Europe after Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was a major in the Army Reserves as a food and agriculture officer until retiring in 1964. Mr. BATES entered the Foreign Service in 1946 and was transferred to the newly formed Agricultural Foreign Service in 1956. His diplomatic posts were in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Paris, Manila, Bogota, Buenos Aires and Brussels. When in Washington, he served on meetings abroad in Tokyo and Geneva, Switzerland.
For several years after retiring in 1974, Mr. BATES became a senior associate of E. A. Jaenke & Associates, an agribusiness-consulting firm. He was a member of the Harvard Club, DACOR, the National Press Club and Bethesda Country Club.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sandra KENNEY of Broomall, Pa., and Sharon GRIMM of Clermont, Fla.; one son, Steven BATES of Woodbine, Md.; three sisters, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
