Fairfield man killed in accident in VB County

BIRMINGHAM --- A 53-year-old Fairfield man died in a traffic accident 3 1/2 miles south of Birmingham on Iowa Highway 1, authorities reported.

The Van Buren County sheriff's department said Robert Dean SNYDER died of injuries received in the accident which occurred at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday.

A passenger in his vehicle, Mary Cohenour, 46, of Fairfield, was reported in serious condition at the Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

R. Dean Snyder, 1103 W. Briggs Ave., was born June 12, 1937, in Birmingham, the son of Robert D. and Lucile Louise Mairet Snyder. He graduated from Birmingham High School in 1954, and married Karen Canaday on Jan. 23, 1955. He was plant manager at Fairfield Line, where he had worked for 36 years. He also owned Town and Country taverns in Fairfield and Keosauqua. He moved to Fairfield in 1975, was a member of Elks Lodge 1192, Eagles Post 1927, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2271, Walton Club and Birmingham United Methodist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Carol SNYDER, Laura SNYDER, both of Fairfield, Diana WELLER of Douds; two granddaughters, his mother of Fairfield and a brother, Eugene of Keosauqua. His father preceded him in death.

The services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Birmingham United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sara Malone officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Burch-Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham. Memorials may be made to the Heart Association, Walton club or charity of the donor's choice.
