E. R. NORVELL DIED EARLY TODAY

The many friends of E. R. NORVELL will be grieved to learn of his death which occurred at 4:40 o'clock this morning at his home on North D street after an illness of several months.

Edmund R. NOVELL, the son of Edmund and Anna WINN NORVELL, was born Sept. 6, 1835, in Barren county, Kentucky. When Mr. NORVELL was about two years of age his father died. A year later he and his mother moved to Carthage , Ill., and in 1840 they came to Iowa locating first on a farm in Van Buren county and then on a farm in Cedar township in Jefferson county.

Mr. NORVELL was married February 8th, 1864, near Pittsburg, Pa., to Miss Lenora (sic. a/k/a Leonora) SHEARER, a resident of this county who was at that time visiting her old home in the east. Mr. and Mrs. NORVELL made their home on a farm in Buchanan township where they lived until nineteen years ago when they moved to Fairfield. If Mr. NORVELL had lived until Sunday he and his wife would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Besides his wife Mr. NORVELL leaves three children to mourn his death: Mrs. Anna VAN NOSTRAND of Benedict, Neb.; Mrs. Amanda Catherine SWITZER of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Charles NORVELL of this city. The youngest daughter Mary passed away when she was four years of age.

The funeral services will be held at two o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Christian church, Rev. R. H. Polly conducting the services. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

EDMUND R. NORVEL (sic.) DIED EARLY THIS MORNING

Resident of Jefferson County For Over Seventy Years

Edmund R. NORVELL, for over seventy years a resident of Jefferson countym passed away at 4:30 this morning at his home on D street, after an illness of several weeks, aged 78 years and 3 months.

The subject of this sketch was born Sept. 6, 1835, in Barren Co., Kentucky; came with his parents to Iowa in 1840, settling in Van Buren county until 1848 when they came to Jefferson county which has been his home ever since. On Feb. 8, 1864 he was united in marriage to Miss Leonora SHEARER at Pittsburg, Pa. Three daughters and one son all of whom, except one daughter, Mary, who died in infancy, survive him. Those who survive are: Mrs. Anna VAN NOSTRAND of Benedict, Nebraska, Mrs. Catherine SWITZER of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Charles of this city, who with the aged invalid wife, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild are left to mourn their loss.

Mr. NORVELL retired from active farm work several years ago and moved into town. While his health had not been very good for several years, until within the past few weeks he walked up town. He suffered from a complication of diseases. The plans were to quietly celebrate their golden wedding on the 8th inst. by having the children eat turkey dinner with them. Mr. NORVELL took an lively interest in politics being a staunch democrat. He had been a member of the Christian church for many years.

Funeral services will be held from the Christian church Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. R. H. Polly. Interment will be made in the Evergreen cemetery.

Buried in Evergreen cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. Old.P.148. Special note - the headstone inscription for Edmund R Norvell was mis-engraved with the DOD as 1913. He died on February 6, 1914, as evidenced by his Jefferson county death record entry and the two obituaries found for him. Family descendants and researchers may want to revise their family tree entries accordingly.
