November 03, 2003Clara Helen Carter, 86, of 102B E. Monroe Ave. died at 11:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at Jefferson County Hospital.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Metz officiating. A graveside service with military rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rock Creek Cemetery near Ollie.
Open visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home, with family visitation from 6:30-8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or Fairfield Public Library.
Mrs. Carter was born Jan. 11, 1917, in Lovilia, the daughter of Earl and Ruby Dunkin Edwards. She married Charles Wayne Carter Dec. 3, 1944, in Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Carter has lived in Fairfield since 1958. She was a graduate of Central College in Pella. She taught in the Iowa public school system in the 1940s. She was a librarian at the Fairfield Public Library for 15 years and did book reviews on KMCD. She served in the United States Navy Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, the now discontinued W.A.V.E.S. during World War II.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, taught Sunday school and helped organize the church library. She also was a member of P.E.O. Chapter C, Jefferson County Geneology Society and American Association of University Women.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Greg Carter and wife Mary Anne of Lisbon, Brian Carter and wife Karen of Mount Pleasant, and Roger Carter and wife Lynn of North Aurora, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
