Veteran Local Merchant--
Bruce GOBBLE Dies At 91

R. Bruce GOBBLE (sic. Robert Bruce GOBBLE), retired clothing merchant and a man associated with local athletics for 70 years, died Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at his home at 704 S. Main St. He was 91.

Services will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church with Dr. John R. Dilley officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are in charge of the Weston Behner Funeral Home.

A member of a pioneer Jefferson County family, GOBBLE was born Feb. 12, 1883 at Abingdon, the son of Lee T. and Mary FLINDT GOBBLE. He moved to Fairfield with his parents in 1896 so that he could attend high school.

Following graduation from Parsons College in 1904, GOBBLE joined his father in the Gobble and Heer Clothing Store. He was married Sept. 29, 1904 to Vera ATCHISON. The couple would have observed their 70th wedding anniversary this month.

GOBBLE was active in the clothing business for 65 years. He purchased his father's interest in the business in 1918 and in 1946 he was joined by his son, Lee T. GOBBLE, who purchased the interest of the late Charles Heer. He was Farifield's senior businessman when he retired from the store in 1969.

GOBBLE was one of Parsons' first football stars. An oustanding fullback, he participated in the sport for four years. Following graduation, he also served as football coach in 1905.

GOBBLE was also among Fairfield's first basketball players. The sport was organized here in 1901 by Company M, 54th Regiment, Iowa National Guard, and he joined the team in 1903, playing for several years.

Through his sporting goods business, GOBBLE was known by coaches and athletes throughout southeast Iowa. An avid fan, he seldom missed a Farifield High School or Parsons College athletic event.

When the Parsons Football Hall of Fame was established in 1966, GOBBLE and the late Mott Sawyers were the first to be selected. GOBBLE was also honored by the Parsons Alumni Association with a recognition award in 1969.

Surviving are his widow; one son, Lee T. GOBBLE; three granddaughters and one brother, Carl F. GOBBLE, Pittsburgh, Pa. One son preceded him in death.

GOBBLE was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church.
