OBITUARY

George C. VAN NOSTRAND

George C. VAN NOSTRAND, 87 of Stamford, Conn., died Monday, July 12, 1999, at Stamford Hospital after a period of illness.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 11 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he retained his membership, with the Rev. Robert Gates officiating. Private family interment of cremains will precede the memorial service at Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Rancho Santa Fe Community Foundation, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., or a charity of the donor's choice. Raymond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. VAN NOSTRAND was born Nov. 18, 1911, in Fairfield, the son of Lewis W. and Nellie STEVER VAN NOSTRAND. He married Elsie SYKORA in Paris, France, in 1945.

He graduated from Grinnell College and the University of Iowa Law School and was Jefferson County attorney in Fairfield from 1936-1942. In World War II, he joined the Judge Advocate General's Corps and later the Air Transport Command, serving in the Middle East and the European Theaters with the rank of colonel. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire, the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. His wife also served in the Air Transport Command.

Following World War II, Mr. VAN NOSTRAND joined American Airlines. He served as general manager of American Airlines in Mexico City and later was instrumental in developing Wayne County Airport in Detroit, O'Hare Airport in Chicago, and JFK Airport in New York. After working at American, he completed his business career as a senior executive of N-REN Corporation, serving as president of several of its subsidiaries.

Mr. and Mrs. VAN NOSTRAND retired to Rancho Santa Fe in 1979. While there, he helped establish the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation and served as its executive director until 1987 and as a director until 1994. Earler this year, they moved to Stamford to be near their family.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Clark VAN NOSTRAND; two grandchildren; and one sister, Virginia VAN NOSTRAND of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Hannah BOWLING, Mary and Martha VAN NOSTRAND; and one brother, Lewis VAN NOSTRAND.

Note: Buried in Lot 1962SD.01 with wife Elsie who died in 2007. The Social Security Death Index gives his day of death as the 13th for some reason.
