Front Page, Column 4O. R. COREY DIED AT 4 A.M. TODAY
Well Known Insurance Man Succumbs After An Operation Thursday NightO. R. COREY, well known as the local agent of the Bankers Life Insurance company, passed away at the Jefferson County hospital at 4 oclock this morning, after he had undergone a successful operation Thursday night for strangulated hernia. He had rallied from the ordeal of the knife and his condition was favorable up to midnight when his heart became affected and he sank gradually until death came. He was conscious to the last and talked to those gathered about his bedside.
Funeral services will be held at the home, 57 South Court street, Monday afternoon at 2:30 oclock. They will be conducted by Dr. H. B. Scoles of the First Methodist church. Members of the Bankers Life's Ottumwa district organization will be the pallbearers. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. COREY was born near Four Corners January 30, 1872, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric COREY, early settlers here. He married Miss Jessie WILLIAMS at Galesburg, Ill., June 22, 1895. She survives.
His father, 94 years old, is still living and is in Des Moines for the winter with another son, S. A. COREY. Mrs. J. S. GAUMER is a sister, and another sister, Mrs. J. H. AHLINE (sic - Laura C. COREY AHLIN, wife of Rev. J. F. AHLIN) of Greeley, Colo., died some years ago.
Mr. COREY was educated at the public schools and at Parsons college, and in 1898 went to Hiteman and bought a drug store, which he owned for 11 years. He sold that and traveled for a year for J. W. Edgerly, wholesale drugs, of Ottumwa, and then bought the pop factory of Alex Easton which he ran until 1915, when he again went on the road this time for Hartz & Bahman of Rock Island. In February, 1925, he joined the Bankers Life organization and became one of its most enthusiastic agents, building up quickly a fine business here.
Mr. COREY was known for his unfailing good humor and cheerfulness and his ability to drive away the clouds of depression that overshadowed his friends.
