William 'Bill' Gale McELWEE

William "Bill" Gale McELWEE, 80, of Mount Pleasant, died due to Alzheimer's disease-related complications Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Mike Hess officiating. Burial will be in Lambirth Cemetery, rural Lockridge.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Murphy Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will be present 6-8 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to Calvary Baptist Church of Alzheimer's Research.

Mr. McELWEE was born Dec. 28, 1931, in rural Henry County, the son of Thomas and Mary BARTON McELWEE. He married Joyce Elizabeth HOURIHAN June 26, 1955, in Salem.

Mr. McELWEE attended grade school in rural Jefferson County and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School. Mr. McELWEE farmed in Henry County and later spent most of his career as part of the Henry County Secondary Roads Department operating a road grader.

Mr. McELWEE served in the United States Army from 1951-1955 during the Korean conflict. He served in the National Guard after returning from overseas.

Mr. McELWEE was a longtime member of Pleasant View Mennonite Church and most recently a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

His hobbies included woodworking, ceramic doll making with his wife and spending quality time with his family, especially his grandson.

Survivors include his wife; three sons: Fred and wife Ann Marie of Lockridge, Mark of Mount Pleasant and Scott and wife Tammy of Cedar, Minn.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister: Sandra SWAILS of Woodbridge, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.
