Mrs. Job E. JOHNSON, well known Fairfield resident and Parsons college for many years, passed away at 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the Nelson Nursing home west of Fairfield. She had been in failing health for the past two months.
Last rites will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Weston Behner funeral home with Dr. J. Henry Teele in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body will lie in state at the funeral home this evening.
Mrs. JOHNSON was the widow of Job E. JOHNSON, also a member of the Parsons college faculty for many years known as "The Father of Football" at the local school. He coached the sport when he first came to the campus in 1899 and was instrumental in constructing the athletic field. Formerly it was known as Alumni Field, and re-named "JOHNSON Field" in his honor in Oct. 1947.
Mr. and Mrs. JOHNSON lived on a farm near Macon, Mo., at the time and were both present at the time of dedication Mrs. JOHNSON returned to Fairfield a few years later to make her home after the death of her husband.
Elizabeth C. JOHNSON, 83, was born May 10, 1877, the daughter of Moreau and Margery GRACE CARROLL (sic. uncertain if the mother's maiden name was GRACE or IRELAND, depending on sources). She was born at Tipton, Iowa. She was graduated from the University of Iowa in 1901 and received her M.A. degree from Radcliff college, Cambridge, Mass., in 1930, while on a leave of absence from her teaching duties at Parsons.
She taught in high schools at West Branch, Iowa Falls, and Davenport; also at Parsons college in Fairfield and Tarkio college at Tarkio, Mo.
She was married to Job E. JOHNSON on June 29, 1909. He passed away in 1948 (sic. October 2, 1948), the year after the athletic field at Parsons college was named in his honor.
Mrs. JOHNSON is survived by one nephew, Dr. C. A. CARROLL (sic. Charles A. CARROLL), Fort Collins, Colo., three grand nephews and several cousins. She was a member of the Methodist church and Chapter C, PEO.
