John L. SPROTT

John L. SPROTT, 76, of Mount Pleasant, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at Park Place Care Center in Mount Pleasant.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Michael Scudder officiating. According to Mr. SPROTT's wishes, his body has been donated to University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Burial will be at a later date in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Mount Pleasant.

Memorials may be directed to Sunshine Academy or a charity of the donor's choice.

Mr. SPROTT was born Feb. 27, 1935, in Lockridge, the son of Charles "Pete" and Selma BROCKSCHMIDT SPROTT. He married Laurene LEE July 26, 1959, at Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant.

Mr. SPROTT attended Saunders Elementary School, Mount Pleasant Middle School and Mount Pleasant High School, graduating in 1953. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant and later his master's degrees from University of Iowa and Missouri State University. He taught school in Fairfield and Quincy, Ill., and for 28 years in Newton, retiring in 1997.

Mr. SPROTT was in the United States Navy Reserves for eight years.

He was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Pleasant and a former member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Newton.

Mr. SPROTT enjoyed reading, learning, teaching and receiving visits from nieces and nephews. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife and one sister, Carol SPROTT of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
