Services for James Clarence VAN NESS, 83, will be held at the Behner Funeral Home Thursday, April 29, at 2 p.m. with interment in the Abingdon Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening, tonight, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
VAN NESS died at 7:20 p.m. Monday at the Van Buren Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for the past month. The family home is near Bonaparte.
James Clarence VAN NESS was born July 3, 1892, in Jefferson County. He was the son of Amos Edmon and Mary Alice MAJORS VAN NESS.
He was married in 1916 to Nellie JOHNSTON who lived at Brookville. She preceded him in death in 1928.
February 23, 1930, he married Laura Idella MOREHEAD at Galesburg, Ill. She died Nov. 16, 1970.
VAN NESS worked for the CB&Q Railroad at Galesburg and farmed the rest of his life in Jefferson, Keokuk and Van Buren Counties.
He was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church and a past member of Abingdon Lodge IOOF in Abingdon.
Survivors incude a daughter, Annalou VAN NESS VIGIL, Olds; a son, Earl Dean, Sperry; five grandchildren.
Also a half-brother, Carl A. CALDWELL, Galesburg; and a half-sister, Mrs. N.B. SCHMIDLIN, Denver, Colo.
He was preceded in death by a half-sister and a brother.

Note: According to his gravestone he was born in 1893. His obituary gives the year as 1892, as does the Social Security Death Index. Both his wives are also buried in Abingdon Cemetery.
