JOHNSTON rites

PACKWOOD-- Funeral services for Sidney F. JOHNSTON, 73, Packwood, will be Friday, 1:30 p.m., at Packwood Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Harbour and Dean Cary officiating.

Burial will be in Packwood Cemetery. Family visitation will be Thursday, 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Raymond Funeral Home.

JOHNSTON died Tuesday morning at University Hospitals in Iowa City. He was born Jan. 15, 1907 in Milton, the son of Craig and Elizabeth KOONTS JOHNSTON. He was reared and educated in the Milton, Lebanon and Keosauqua area and graduated from Keosauqua High School.

He married Ruth McAFEE Aug. 8, 1928. They lived in the Brighton and Mount Pleasant communities before moving to Packwood in 1941. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a farmer before his retirement and had been an agent for Jefferson County Mutual Insurance Company for 27 years.

Surviving are his wife; four daughters, Wanda COX, Fairfield, Beverly WESTENDORF, Davenport, Doris ALLER, Nobelsville, Ind., Faye DAVIS, Hedrick; two sons, Melvin and Leon, both of Packwood; 22 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; four sisters, Pauline SCOTT, Whittier, Calif., Beryl LEACH, Memphis, Mo., Kathryn HANSEN, Burlington, Patty RAY, Schertz, Tex.; three brothers, Robert, Kansas City, Kan., Clark, Fairfield and Hayes, Kansas City, Mo.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
