Former Fairfield Resident Passed Away in Ottumwa Today
Newton G. LATHROP, formerly of this city, passed away at 9 o'clock this morning in Ottumwa at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Maude ALDER, 120 Birch street. He had been in poor health for sometime (sic. some time). He made his home in Fairfield for over thirty years spending the past few months in Ottumwa with his daughter.
The body was brought to the Hoskins Funeral Home pending funeral arrangements.
Mr. LATHROP was born March 18, 1861 (sic. see note below). He is survived by three children, Mrs. ADLER (sic. a/k/a ALDER in previous parts of this obituary), John LATHROP of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Anna VAN BLEET of Hamburg, Wis. Also one brother, Jasper of Fairfield and one sister, Mrs. Margaret MATHIS of Letts, Iowa.
* Transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.
Note: Buried in Evergreen cemetery in the public grounds area, Row 7 space 35. His headstone is hand engraved with cursive writing for the inscription. His DOB from prior reading of that inscription implied that he was born in December 1841. It appears to this contributor that the wording was actually "Borned 1841", which had previously been interpreted as "Born D 1841". The DOB is written out as "Died 1932". Since the obituary provided DOB was March 18, 1861 and the headstone is, at the least, DOB 1841, the DOB should be considered somewhat uncertain.
Newton died on August 24, 1932. His wife, Jennie E MOWER LATHROP (June 13, 1846 - Sept. 27, 1935) is buried beside him in space 36 of the same row, but her grave is not marked with a headstone or inscription.
Addendum: Locating Newton and Jennie/Virginia in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses, it would appear that Newton was born about 1861, not the 1841 noted on his gravestone. Jennie's age varies (sometimes widely) but Newton's remains consistent.
