Wilbur A. Knauss, 87, of Guthrie Center, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Marys Catholic Church in Guthrie Center, with the Rev. Chris Fontanini officiating. Burial of ashes will be at Resurrection Cemetary in rural Guthrie Center.

Family will be present during visitation from 5:30-7 p.m. today with a Vigil service at 7 p.m. at the church parish hall.

Beidelman-Twigg Funeral Home in Guthrie Center is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Knauss was born Feb. 12, 1916, in Fairfield, the son of Harry and Laura Haifley Knauss. He married Ruby Craig. She preceded him in death. He married Elnor White Aug. 20, 1955, in Guthrie Center.

Mr. Knauss grew up in Fairfield, graduating from Fairfield High School in 1933. He entered the United States Army in 1942 and was discharged in 1945. After his discharge, he worked as a parts man in Fairfield and in 1952, he and his family moved to Guthrie Center. He worked in the parts department for Guthrie Automotive and the Ford dealerships in Guthrie Center. He later worked as a bookkeeper for Christensen Motors in Audubon, retiring in 1980. After retirement, he worked as a bookkeeper for various businesses, including Priestley Construction.

Mr. Knauss was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, American Legion VFW, Elks Lodge in Atlantic, Eagles Club in Fairfield, and served with the honor guard of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jerry Knauss and wife Tudy of Burlington, James Knauss and wife Kathy of Lake City, and Richard Knauss and wife Ann of Madrid; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Berdina Metz of Fairfield.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter; two brothers; and two sisters.
