Ruth J. Countryman, 87, of Birmingham, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at her home.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham, with the Rev. Connie Markle officiating. Burial will be in Mapel Hill Cemetery in Birmingham.

Open visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established to the Birmingham First Responders or the Birmingham Fire Department.

Mrs. Countryman was born Jan. 23, 1916, in Henry County, the daughter of Frank and Sophia Schadt Schlarbaum. She married Donnell Countryman Nov. 2, 1935, in Mount Pleasant. He died April 18, 1972.

Mrs. Countryman grew up in the Kilbourne community and graduated from Kilbourne High School. She lived all of her married life west of Birmingham. She was a farmer and was active in her neighborhood group.

Survivors include two sons, Harold Countryman and wife Ramona and Larry Countryman and wife Bette, all of Birmingham; four granddaughters; one grandson; three great-grandsons; and two sisters, Lola Nedrow of Douds and Velma Anderson of Burlington.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Lee Countryman; one brother, Jack Schlarbaum; one sister, Elsie Helmhout; and one grandson in infancy.
