Leo Eugene 'Gene' ROBERTS

Leo Eugene "Gene" ROBERTS, 80, of Fairfield, died Friday morning, Jan. 6, 2012, at SunnyBrook Living Care Center.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, just south of Prairie City, with the Rev. Mark Brase officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Decatur County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited in care of Scott Roberts, 217 W. Fourth, Lamoni 50140, or to SunnyBrook Living Care Center in care of Vicki Eastburn, 2204 Westhills Drive, Fairfield 52556.

Mr. ROBERTS was born March 30, 1931, in Percy, the son of Raymond Milton ROBERTS and Amy FINDLOW ROBERTS. He married Stephanie Jane ROBERTS June 15, 1952. She died Dec. 21, 2011.

Mr. ROBERTS lived near Knoxville for several years until moving to Des Moines, where he graduated from Des Moines East High School in 1949.

Mr. ROBERTS served in the U.S. Air Force for four years and was stationed at the base in Rantoul, Ill. After retiring from the military, Mr. ROBERTS worked for a few years at Des moines Meat Locker. He then began working for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and worked his way up to a management position. He was employed there more than 25 years. Upon his retirement, the ROBERTSes moved to an acreage near Osceola, where Mr. ROBERTS gardened and raised ducks and geese. The couple later moved to Russell and to Fairfield in 2009.

Mr. ROBERTS enjoyed entertaining his family in Osceola, especially his grandchildren, teaching them about wildlife and fishing. He and his wife enjoyed annual trips to Minnesota, where they fished and cooked. He also enjoyed hunting, playing cards, spending time with family and friends and fish fries.

Survivors include one daughter, Victoria EASTBURN and husband David of Fairfield; one son, Scott ROBERTS and wife Karen of Lamoni; and six grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Virginia VAIL.
