Catharine R. BARKER CRIST, 76, of Davenport, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Rehab Center in Davenport.
A service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport. Private burial of cremains will be in Miller Chapel Cemetery, rural Keosauqua.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Family visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.
Memorials to Good Samaritan Center-Davenport or St. Johns United Methodist Church may be left at either funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 2304 E. 31st St., Davenport 52807.
Mrs. CRIST was born July 7, 1935, in Keosauqua, the daughter of Hugh and Grace METZ BARKER. She married Bill CRIST July 17, 1955, in Keosauqua.
Mrs. CRIST attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught fifth grade in Keosauqua. After taking time off to raise her children, she returned to teaching kindergarten at Harmony Community School in Bonaparte and Farmington. She finished her bachelor's degree at Iowa Wesleyan College while raising a family and teaching. The CRISTs moved to Davenport in 1982, and Mrs. CRIST taught elementary school at Durant Community School and did some substitute teaching. The couple wintered a few times in Prescott Valley, Ariz., and moved there for a short time.
Mrs. CRIST was involved in the Harmony Education Association for many years. She was a member of Keosauqua Mothers Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, PEO, Order of the Eastern Star and Keosauqua United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She also was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Davenport.
Mrs. CRIST enjoyed spending time with family and friends, researching her family genealogy, gardening, sewing, traveling, camping and teaching new things to everyone.
Survivors include her four children: Keith CRIST and wife Patty of Agency, Tom CRIST and wife Debi of Elyria, Ohio, Mary WILSON and husband Terry of Davenport and Craig CRIST and wife Teri of Ankeny; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one stepgrandson.
