Gary Robert SHELANGOSKI, 74, of Yellville, Ark., formerly of Brighton, died early Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, at his son's home in Cedar Rapids.
A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain, with the Rev. Robert Striegel officiating. A service will be held in Yellville, Ark., at a later date. The body will be cremated. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in East Pleasant Plain, with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 29 of Washington, Iowa.
Open visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Friday at the church, with the family present 5-7 p.m. and Prayers for a Christian Wake at 7 p.m.
Memorials to Pine Mountain Volunteer Fire Department or St. Andrew Catholic Church may be left at the church or may be mailed to the family at 241 MC 8007, Yellville, AR 72687.
Arrangements are in the care of Gould Funeral Home in Brighton.
Mr. SHELANGOSKI was born Nov. 10, 1937, in Brighton, the son of Robert H. and Mary E. DEUTSCH SHELANGOSKI. He married Georgia DICKINSON in 1958. They later divorced. He married Donna M. EDGINGTON Aug. 18, 1988, in Mount Pleasant.
Mr. SHELANGOSKI grew up in Brighton. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1957 and from the University of Iowa in 1965 with a degree in chemical engineering. He farmed for 10 years and worked as a chemical engineer for Dow Chemical Co. in Michigan and as plant manager for Reichhold Chemical Co. in St. Louis and Kansas City. He retired in 2001 and moved to Yellville, Ark., where he was active as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical responder in the Pine Mountain district.
Mr. SHELANGOSKI served in the United States Navy.
He was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Yellville, serving on many committees, helping remodel the church and working on other volunteer projects.
He also was an investment day trader, made wine, beer and jelly and played cards.
Survivors include his wife; four sons: Bruce and wife Mindy of Cedar Rapids, Jeff and wife Linda of Davenport, Gordon and wife Mary Lou of Brighton and Eric and wife Angi of Solon; three stepchildren: Roman EDGINGTON and wife Erin of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer BROOKS and husband Fred of Savannah, Mo, and Jeanette HAUPT and husband John of Avondale, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his mother of Washington; one brother: Don SHELANGOSKI of Springfield, Mo.; and two sisters: Pat DAVIS of Iowa City and Sheila FORMAN of Burnsville, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother: Steven.
