A Sudden Death

Our people werre startled on Sunday morning by the report that Miss Nora Junia RAINS (sic. correct surname should be RAINES) had died during the previous night.

She had been complaining for the past week of being quite poorly. But as she had not been well for some time past the family felt no unusual concern that she was in eminent danger. Saturday she was taken worse. A physician was called at once, who informed the friends that she was in a critical condition. She lived until three o'clock Sunday morning, when she passed peacefully away.

Miss RAINS (sic.) would have been eighteen years old had she lived until September 22d. She was a remarkably bright young lady. She graduated from our city high school last commencement day, and expected to take a college course if her health would permit. She was an active member of the Christian church and took a deep interest in all its working agencies. Elder J. A. RAINS (sic. John Alexander RAINES), her father, was in Indiana on business at the time of her death. He arrived home on the morning of the 31st, the day of the funeral.

The funeral service was held at the home residence at two o'clock, conducted by Eld. G. W. Mapes. The attendance was large and a deep feeling of sorrow prevaded the whole company of sympathizing friends, some of whom had come from neighboring towns to attend the service.

* Transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: Nora Junia RAINES was born September 22, 1874 and died May 29, 1892. She was buried in the RAINES family plot in Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. Old.P.227.
