Injuries Fatal To Martinsburg Youth

MARTINSBURG -- Loyd RILEY, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Riley of Martinsburg, died at 9:40 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa as result of injuries sustained in a tractor-automobile collision here Thursday evening.

The accident occurred on highway 149 about 6:45 and almost directly in front of the service station operated by young RILEY's father, Adrian. He did not see the collision.

The tractor being operated by the youth tipped over after it and an automobile driven by Edgar K. Sweeney, 42, of Burlington side-swiped. It was reported that that the car caught one wheel of the tractor, upsetting it.

Riley suffered a fracture of the left thigh, fracture of the pelvis and internal injuries.

The driver of the automobile was not injured and his car slightly damaged.

The boy was born March 25, 1936 at Farson, the son of Adrian and Gleda GRISSOM RILEY.

He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Helen FITZGERALD of Hedrick and Dorothy RILEY at home; two brothers, Melvin of Martinsburg and Larry at home; his grandfather, Frank GRISSOM of Hedrick; and his great-grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth WEST of Fairfield. A brother, Earl, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hedrick Christian church in charge of the Rev. W. A. Purdy. Burial will be in Abingdon cemetery. The body is at the Fremont funeral chapel.
