GEORGE LANE DIED LAST EVENING

George LANE, one of Fairfield's oldest residents, passed away last evening at nine o'clock at his home at 504 North Ninth street. Mr. LANE was eighty-eight years and six months old. Death was due (sic. to) the infirmatives of age, he having failed rapidly the past three weeks.

Mr. LANE was born in Ohio, but came to Iowa when a young man. He married Miss Sarah Elliott, and they came to Fairfield a quarter of a century ago, making their home here ever since. He was for many years a valued employee of the Turney Wagon Works.

He is survived by his widow and one son, Everett LANE of 805 South Depot street.

The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at three o'clock and burial wil be in Evergreen cemetery.

* Transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.

Note:

George LANE is believed to have been born on or about Feb. 20, 1826.

Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. Old.P.104. His grave is not marked with a headstone, however.

A previous Evergreen Cemetery transcription used Sept. 4, 1914 as the DOD. The source for that date is not known, but considering that the obituary was published on September 3, 1914 but refers to the death taking place "last evening", the actual date could be either September 2nd or 3rd, 1914. Sometimes the exact dates are hard to determine depending on the interpretation of "last evening."
