Madeline Pauline LANE

Madeline Pauline LANE, 86, of 606 W. Burlington Ave., died at 4:35 a.m. Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Following Mrs. LANE's wishes, the casket will be closed. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Joan Erbe officiating.

Open visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home so friends may sign the guest register.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the American Lung Association.

Mrs. LANE was born April 28, 1916, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Jacob and Rachel RICHARDS SHANSTROM. She married Clarence THOMAS (sic. Clarence James THOMAS) Dec. 20, 1934. He died in 1941. She then married James LANE (sic. James Thomas LANE) Jan. 12, 1946. He died in 1991.

Mrs. LANE worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown after the death of her first husband. She then worked at Fairfield Laundry and Cleaners for many years. When it closed, she transferred to the Fort Madison Cleaners. After her retirement, she continued to work part-time for the Fairfield school system as a substitute cook. In January 2000, she went to live with their daughter Pat LATHROP and her husband Jack and their daughter.

Mrs. LANE did volunteer work at The Bargain Box.

Survivors include four sons, Richard THOMAS and Mary GRIFFIN on Fairfield, Ronald THOMAS and wife Mary of Webster, Texas; James LANE and wife Deanna of Fairfield and Daniel LANE and wife Lana of Pleasant Plain; five daughters, Peggy LANE of Fairfield, Karen GORDON and husband Bob of Keota, Patricia LATHROP and husband Jack of Fairfield, Kathy KLETT and husband Terry of Fairfield and Connie GARDNER and husband Dave of Wales, Wis.; one stepson, Harold LANE of Iowa City; 31 grandchildren; 37 greatgrandchildren; 37 great-great grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by both parents; one stepdaughter, Della Marie OWENS; one grandchild; one sister, Florence SCHMIDT; and one brother, Richard SHANSTROM.
