William Edward DAVIS, 75, died Sunday of a self-inflicted gun wound. He had been in ill health for several years.
DAVIS fired a shotgun into his chest in the garage of the Nels Stephens home at Abingdon about 9:45 a.m. His body was discovered by Stephens when he went to the garage to empty ashes.
Jefferson County Coroner Jack Raymond and Sheriff Jim Griffiths were called to the Stephens home after the body was found. Raymond said no inquest will be held.
DAVIS was a life-long resident of Abingdon. He was born May 21, 1884, the son of William F. and Lucinda McKINNEY DAVIS. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Mintie DOROTHY, Abingdon; and one brother, Alvie B. DAVIS, Batavia Route 2.
Five brothers and three sisters are deceased.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Abingdon Church in charge of Rev. Lafe Culver. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. The body is at the Raymond Funeral Home.
Note: I never knew him by William, everyone called him “Fatty”, he was real skinny.
