Samuel STAM

Samuel STAM, 95, of Stanton, Tenn., formerly of Keosauqua and Floris died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at Crestview Health Care Center in Brownsville, Tenn.

A Masonic memorial service will be held at a later date at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua. The body has been cremated. Interment will be in Floris Cemetery.

Samuel STAM

Samuel STAM, 95, formerly of Keosauqua, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at Crestview Health Care Center in Brownsville, Tenn.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Bill Shewmaker officiating. Masonic rites by Olive Branch Lodge and Keosauqua Lodge will follow. Burial of cremains will be in floris Cemetery, with a flag presentation by American Legion Beer-Barker Post of Keosauqua.

Family visitation will be 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to Sam E. STAM, 142 Carter Ave., Ottumwa 52501.

Mr. STAM was born Nov. 19, 1916, in Davis County, the son of Mike and Paralee STRICKLAND STAM. He married Leona WATKINS Nov. 16, 1941, in Lancaster, Mo. She died Nov. 15, 1988.

Mr. STAM grew up in Davis County and worked at Swift & Co. in Bloomfield before and after his military service. He then transferred to Swift in Ottumwa and went on to own and operate the Skelly gas station in Agency. He was a partner in Floris Creamery and Stam & Whan Salvage Co. and worked for Ralston-Purina in St. Louis and Ottumwa Feed Co. The STAMs lived in Bloomfield, Agency, Floris and Ottumwa before moving to Keosauqua in 1983. In 2003, Mr. STAM moved to Stanton, Tenn., to live with his daughter and son-in-law.

Mr. STAM was stationed in North Africa while serving in the United States Navy from 1942-1945.

Mr. STAM was a 60-year member of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons Olive Branch Lodge No. 21 of Agency. He received the Governor's Volunteer Award in 1997 and was a member of the Keosauqua Lions Club, where he received the Warren Coleman award for outstanding service.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and playing cards.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra SMITH and husband Elwyn of Stanton, Tenn.; one son, Sam E. STAM and wife Marcia of Ottumwa; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary RENO and Elini UNDERWOOD; and one brother, Myron "Tiny" STAM. His brother Elmo STAM died Dec. 14, 2011.
