Richard 'Dick' Leaman LEED

Richard "Dick" Leaman LEED, 82, of Ithaca, N.Y., died from lung cancer Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, at home.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Unitarian Church in Ithaca, with the Rev. James K. Boodley officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity of the donor's choice.

Bangs Funeral Home of Ithaca is assisting the family.

Mr. LEED was born Jan. 31, 1929, in Lititz, Pa., the son of Jacob McHugh LEED and Ada Moseman LEAMAN LEED. He married Gretel "Gerry" EDWARDS REINHOLD in 1956 in Pennsylvania. She died in 1994.

Mr. LEED received a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College and a doctorate from Cornell University. He then joined the faculty of the Cornell University Division of Modern Languages, retiring in 1994. He was in charge of the Russian language program and served for a number of years as director of the department's language and phonetics laboratories. He was author, co-author and editor of a dozen or so books having to do with the Russian language and Slavic linguistics. He also had several hundred letters to the editor and op-ed pieces published in various journals and newspapers.

Mr. LEED raised sheep on the family farm with his wife and children. He also enjoyed cooking, making jelly, listening to the music of J.S. Bach, reading, debating and making puns. In retirement, he enjoyed analyzing the meter of Shakespeare's works and playing parcheesi with his family.

Survivors include two sons, Andrew REINHOLD LEED and wife Liza of Candor, N.Y., and Noah REINHOLD LEED and wife Grace of Nottingham, N.H.; one daughter, Jessica LEED MALLOY and husband Ken of Fairfield; one brother, Jacob LEED of Cambridge, Mass.; and nine grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth CANNON, Helen FRITCHEY and Ruth in childhood.
