Luther C. Barr, 85, 3000 W. Madison Ave., died at 5:57 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at Jefferson County Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen Higdon officiating.
The body has been cremated. Interment will be in McDowell Cemetery near Pleasant Plain at a later date.
A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association.
Mr. Barr was born April 21, 1918, south of Wayland, the son of Ray and Ethel Stiles Barr. He married Alma V. Douthart. They were divorced. He married Adra Shipley May 26, 1979.
Mr. Barr grew up in the Packwood-Fairfield area, lived in the Albia community and lived in Burlington for 25 years before returning to Fairfield.
Mr. Barr's family moved to a farm between Packwood and Fairfield when he was young. He attended school in rural Jefferson County through eighth grade. He did his farming with horses until 1956, when he began farming with a tractor. He began working for International Harvester in Ottumwa in 1965 and later worked for American Chain and Cable in Fairfield. His pastimes included camping, fishing and working with his horses.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Carl W. Barr of Fairfield; three daughters, Bonnie Devlin and husband Bob of Nixa, Mo., Bettye K. Coffin of Fairfield and Mary K. Barr of Davenport; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ebelsheiser; eight stepchildren; 28 stepgrandchildren and 33 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughhter, Barbara J. Stadling; one brother, Carl Barr; one sister, Florence Woolums; two grandchildren; and three stepchildren.
