George Joseph KESSEL

George Joseph KESSEL, 69, 900 S. fourth St., died Saturday, Oct. 15, 1994, at Jefferson county Hospital.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Francis Henricksen officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Prayers for a Christian Wake will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home, followed by family visitation. A memorial has been established to Jefferson County Hospice.

KESSEL was born Jan. 26, 1925, in Fairfield, the son of Clarence and Marie DRISH KESSEL. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1943, when he was inducted into the Army. He served overseas for three years in Germany, France and Belgium. After the service, he lived briefly in Burlington and worked for the Case factory. He moved to Fairfield in 1946 and he and his father established Kessel's Conoco at Fourth Street and Burlington Avenue. When he retired in January 1990, he sold the business to his son Steven, but continued as advisor and bookkeeper until his death. He married Wanda SAMUELSON on Oct. 7, 1950, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield. He was a member of that church and the Elks Club. His hobbies were numismatics, antiques, fishing and hunting.

Surviving are his wife; five sons, Patrick, Steven, Robert A. and William, all of Fairfield, Michael of Bettendorf; four daughters, Jane ADAM of Richland, Karen CLINGAN of Fairfield, Susan WHITE of St, Peters, Mo., Amy HUDSON of Marshalltown; 18 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. His parents and two grandchildren preceded him in death.
