Injuries Fatal to Fairfield Boy, 13

Ronald Dewayne HOOTMAN, 13 year-old Fairfield youth, died Saturday night if injuries he received in a traffic accident near Douds on July 1. His death came at 10:10 p.m. at the University Hospital in Iowa City.

The boy was critically injured when his motorcycle collided with a maintenance truck at a grade crossing about 2 miles east of Douds.

The four-wheeled vehicle involved in the crash was a regular pickup truck adapted to run on rails and owned by the Rock Island Railroad.

Reports said the motorcycle was going across a grade crossing on a dead end country road leading to the Des Moines river where the youth was staying at a cabin.

The injured boy was first taken to the Jefferson County Hospital and immediately transferred to the University Hospital suffering from severe head injuries.

Last rites for Ronald HOOTMAN will be Tuesday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Ned. Gillum in charge. Burial will be held in Evergreen Cemetery. The body is at the Raymond Funeral Home.

Ronald Dewayne HOOTMAN was born Aug. 15, 1956, in Fairfield, the son of Dewayne and Wilma TOMPKINSON HOOTMAN. He had lived all his life in Fairfield and was a student at the Fairfield Junior High. He attended the Christian Church.

Survivors include his parents; one sister, Sherry, at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth HOOTMAN, Fairfield; and a grandmother, Mrs. William TOMPKINSON, Birmingham.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, William TOMPKINSON who died April 14, 1970.
