Charles Edward 'Ed' ADKINS

Charles Edward 'Ed' ADKINS, 80, of Ottumwa died Wednesday morning, Oct. 1, 1997, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

The graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield with Mike Stockton officiating. Family and friends will meet at Behner Funeral Home at 9:15 p.m. Saturday. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family request memorials be made to Fairfield High School Library.

ADKINS was born Oct. 17, 1916, in Davenport, the son of Charles E. and Evie TAYLOR ADKINS. He married Alice Louise BROWN on Dec. 23, 1935, in Mexico, Mo. She died Oct. 23, 1955.

He had lived most of his life in the Fairfield community, returning to Ottumwa from Phoenix. He was head of the vehicle maintenance department at Fairfield Community School District. He also was the school bus driver for all sports and band activities during his time at the school.

When he lived in Phoenix he was a self-employed food caterer. He was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Phoenix and Centerville.

Survivors include one son, Chuck of Ottumwa; two daughters, Jill ROBERTS of Ottumwa and Jo Dee COTTRELL of Agency; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Margarette ORCUTT of Monticello and Ruth WILLIAMS of Washington, Iowa.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Marie DUMONT and Bernice GREB.
