The funeral mass for John R. BAIRD, 58, Route 3, who died at 8:45 p.m. Friday, March 3, 1989, at Jefferson County Hospital, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. William Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Prayers for a Christian Wake will be recited a 7 tonight at Raymond Funeral Home, followed by visitation. Memorials have been established to the Children's Rehabilitation Center at Johnson and the Jefferson County Public Health Nurses.
BAIRD was born July 3, 1930, in Fairfield, the son of Bruce and Bernice BRADFIELD BAIRD LITTLETON. He grew up in Fairfield, graduated from Fairfield High School and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif. for three years with the U.S. Marines during World War II. He lived a short time in California and from 1954 to 1956 in Ottumwa while working for CB and Q Railroad. He worked at American Chain and Cable in Fairfield for close to 25 years and was custodian at First National Bank in Fairfield for five years before declining health forced him to retire in September 1988. He lived most of his life in Fairfield, where he was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He married Nancy O'NEILL June 12, 1954, at St. Mary Catholic Church. She survives.
Also Surviving are three daughters, Susan HEDLUND of Duluth, Minn., Kathleen NESS of Cedar Rapids, Christena COUNTRYMAN of Fairfield; a son Brian of Peoria, Ill.; five grandchildren; two brothers, Robert E. of East Moline, Ill., and Carroll W. of Cody, Wyo. A. grandson and his parents preceded him in death.
