Death of John AUGUST

John AUGUST, one of the pioneer settlers of Jeffeson county, died at his home in this city Sunday morning at 7 o'clock from interstitial nephritis. He had been failing in health for several months and his death was not unexpected. Mr. AUGUST was born in Hohen Soken, Sweden, May 8th, 1832. In 1853 with his parents he sailed for Quebec and then went to Montreal, where he worked on the canal near that city for several months. Subsequently he went to Chicago, where his parents had gone a short time before, and where his father died. The family was in poor circumstances but by his energy and perseverence he soon earned enough to bring his mother to this county. Upon his arrival here he purchased forty acres of land and by unceasing toil he increased his possessions until at the time of his death he owned 110 acres of land and some property in Fairfield. On September 22d, 1858, at the home of Ward LAMSON, he was united in marriage to Miss Matilda SAMUELSON, who survives him. Eight children were born of this union - four of whom are living - Mrs. Emma E. JOHNSON, Albert A. (sic. a/k/a Albert John AUGUST), Mrs. Alfrida A. LUNDQUIST (sic. a/k/a Amelia A. LUNDQUIST, the first and middle names switched in order), and Hannah E. Mr. AUGUST had been a member of the Swedish Lutheran church for a number of years and was greatly respected by all who knew him for his honesty and uprightness of character. The funeral services were held at the home of the family in the southeastern part of the city by Rev. W.J. Funkey, assisted by Rev. C.J. Maxell, Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock and the remains were interred in the Evergreen cemetery.

Note: Buried in Evergreen cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. 2nd.024. The headstone inscription for John has DOB May 8, 1832 and DOD Jan. 26, 1900. The DOD is believed to be an engraving error. The obituary and death record in Jefferson county point to Sunday, January 28, 1900 for the date of death. Other, unconfirmed sources have used August 3, 1832 for his DOB.
