Vivian ABERNETHY

Vivian ABERNETHY, 89, of Galesburg, Ill., died at 4:20 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011.

A service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes & Crematory in Knoxville, Ill., with the Rev. Greg Fitch and the Rev. Martha Jean Fitch officiating. Burial will be at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg, Ill.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. ABERNETHY was born June 25, 1922, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Louis and Ethel McWILLIAMS SHELLMAN. She married Ted ABERNETHY Dec. 10, 1942, at the Baptist church parsonage in Lockridge. He died in 2003.

Mrs. ABERNETHY graduated from Fairfield High School in 1940. She worked at Fairfield Glove and Mitten Factory in Fairfield; Bluebell in Abingdon, Ill.; and Gross Company in Galesburg. She was a patient assistant for 20 years at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. She also was a homemaker. She cared for her husband for seven years after he suffered a stroke until his death.

Mrs. ABERNETHY was a member of First Christian Church, Galesburg. She was a past member of OAKS Senior Center's Swinging Acorns Band, playing music with her husband and performing at nursing homes.

Mrs. ABERNETHY enjoyed 50 years of gardening and canning, sewing, decorating her home and cooking, especially pies.

Survivors include two children, Connie L. ABERNETHY and Rodney A. ABERNETHY and wife Carol, all of Galesburg; and one sister, Elaine BAESE of Lockridge.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one infant granddaughter.
