Cecil O. THOMAS, 96, of rural Keosauqua, died at 12:40 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

Cecil Otto THOMAS

Cecil Otto THOMAS, 96, of rural Van Buren County, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with Lee McIntosh officiating. Burial, with military rites by American Legion Beer-Barker Post 113, will be in Pittsburg Cemetery.

Memorials to Public Health of Van Buren County may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 14378 Highway 2, Cantril 52542.

Mr. THOMAS was born Feb. 21, 1915, in a log house on the family farm, the son of Otto and Anna TRCA THOMAS.

During World War II, Mr. THOMAS served in the United States Navy 63rd Battalion Seabees at Guadalcanal, New Britain and the Philippines. He operated heavy equipment to build roads, including Henderson Field.

After the war, Mr. THOMAS worked as a heavy equipment operator on many road and dam projects throughout Iowa and the western United States. He was a steward of the family's Century Farm.

Mr. THOMAS enjoyed storytelling, hunting and fishing and was a source for the Veterans History Project.

Survivors include several relatives, including his cousin, Max THOMAS of Cantril.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Elizabeth THOMAS FORREST and Ruby May THOMAS HOIE.
