Mrs. HUGHES Is Dead, Rites Set Here Saturday

Mrs. Walter B. (sic - Walter V.) HUGHES 76, daughter of a pioneer Fairfield family, died Thursday in a hospital at Topeka, Kan. Death was caused by cerebral hemorrage (sic - hemorrhage).

Funeral services will be at her family home, the former J. P. MANATREY residence, presently the Lewis WHEELOCK home, at 2 p.m. Saturday. Dr. Curtis R. Douglass, pastor of the Presbyterian church, will conduct the services.

Mrs. HUGHES, the former Bonnie May MANATREY, was born Aug. 4, 1883, the daughter of John Peter and Cordelia MANATREY. She was a lifetime resident of Fairfield, was graduated from Mt. Vernon seminary in Washington, D.C., and attended Parsons college in Fairfield. She was a member of Elzevir sorority, presently Alpha Gamma Delta, and helped organize the Empyrean sorority now Delta Zeta. She was a member of the Presbyterian church; PEO Chapter C; Abracadabra club; and had a lifetime courtesy membership in the Fairfield Elks club in honor of her husband who was a past exalted ruler. Mr. HUGHES, who was president of Iowa Malleable Iron company, died in 1945.

Survivors are two sisters, Hazel MANATREY of Fairfield and Mrs. M. W. JENCKS of Topeka; two nieces, Mrs. John A. ABRAHAMS, Topeka, and Mrs. Roger WILLSON, Cambridge, Mass., and a nephew, Lewis WHEELOCK, Fairfield. A sister, Mrs. Louise WHEELOCK of Des Moines, preceded her in death.

Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Hunt, John Hunt, Wilson Heflin, Til Johnson, D. J. White and John Lamson, the latter of Hinsdale, Ill.

The body will arrive tonight at the Raymond funeral home.
