Lester Howard SMITH

The Rev. Lester Howard SMITH 89, of Columbus Neb., and formally (sic) of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in Columbus Nebraska.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Mike Hess officiating. Burial will be in the Lockridge Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Calvary Baptist Church for its mission work.

The Rev. SMITH was born Sept. 11, 1921, in Annandale, M.N., the son of Leon and Ethel DUNN SMITH. He married Louise Irene FANBERG in 1942. She died in 1991.

He graduated from the Annandale High School in 1939. He attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago and while attending, he worked at Mars Candy Company where he met his wife. They moved to Benson, M.N., where they joined the Evangelical Free Church working on deputations in Minnesota and Iowa. Later they moved to Kerkhovan, M.N., where he worked with his father-in-law at Fanberg's Seed Corn Company.

In 1948, the couple moved to Storm Lake where the Rev. SMITH attended Buena Vista College and worked as a purchasing agent at High Grades Meat Packing Facility.

In 1950, he began as a minister of Elk Baptist Church at Alta. He also pastored at the Baptist Church in Cherokee.

In 1971, the couple moved to Hillsboro to take over the duties at the Baptist churches of Hillsboro and Harrisburg. The Rev. SMITH later served churches as pastor for the Lockridge and Rome Baptist churches. He also served as an interim pastor at the Danville Baptist Church.

He retired in Mount Pleasant.

Survivors include his three children: Daniel SMITH and wife Janet of New Freeport, Pa., David SMITH and wife Patricia of Sprit Lake and Penelope BARELS and husband Brian of Columbus, Neb.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harry and Cleve SMITH; two sisters, Ione and an infant at birth; and his second wife Mary in 2007.
