LOCAL WOMAN SUCCUMBS TO BRIEF ILLNESS

Death came suddenly early this morning to Elizabeth Josephine BONFIELD, one of Fairfield's best known residents and long-time sales clerk in local retail establishments.

Miss BONFIELD was in her usual health yesterday, but complained of not feeling well Monday evening. She took suddenly ill later in the night and passed away at 1 a.m. today.

The body was taken to the Monger funeral home where last rites are pending word from relatives.

Miss BONFIELD had clerked in Fairfield stores for over half a century. Forty-six of those years were spent in the Fair store which was located on the south side of the square where Rockwoods is now located.

Before she began her long career as a sales clerk, she served in the Fairfield post office while the late G. D. McGaw was postmaster. Mr. McGaw was appointed to his post in June, 1891.

At that time the post office was located on South Court street, where the Express office is now located.

When C. W. Wade purchased Graham's Fair store in February, 1897, Miss BONFIELD was clerking in the store at that time. The store then occupied the room on North Main street where the Wardrobe cleaning establishment is now located.

Miss BONFIELD remained a faithful clerk with the firm until Mr. Wade sold the store in March, 1943, when he retired.

But that did not end her career in the retail business. She remained with the firm which was purchased by Rockwoods, and was still an employe at the store at the time of her death.

In all, she spent more than 50 years behind the counter serving customers from the Fairfield trade territory. During the long span of years she acquired a long list of friends and neighbors.

Elizabeth Josephine BONFIELD, 73, was born June 7, 1876 in Fairfield, the daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret BONFIELD. She was reared and educated in Fairfield, and spent her entire life in this community.

She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic church, and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Miss BONFIELD is survived by two sisters, Katherine BONFIELD, Fairfield and Nellie BONFIELD, Des Moines; and two nephews, George BONFIELD, St. Augustine, Fla., and T. Francis BONFIELD, Philadelphia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.
