Leland McCORMICK, 85, of Iowa City, formerly of Fairfield, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011.
A graveside memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield, with the Rev. Medea Saunders officiating.
A funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Iowa City.
Open visitation will be 4:30-6 p.m. Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 2675 E. Washington St., Iowa City 52245.

Leland Maurice McCORMICK, age 85, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011 in Iowa City. Leland was born October 3, 1925 near Fairfield, Iowa to Mahlon and Olive MONSON McCORMICK. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1943 and spent two years with the U.S. Army including 13 months stationed in Korea. He worked for Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company in Grinnell as a loss prevention inspector until he moved to Iowa City in 1952 and became Secretary-Treasurer and Manager of the Northwestern mutual Insurance Association. He operated McCormick Insurance Agency for 36 years until his retirement in 1988. He married Barbara DeLAY of Waukee in 1956 and they have made their home in Iowa City for the past 55 years.
Leland was a member of the Iowa City Jaycees for 11 years and earned the Key Man Award in 1955. He was a charter member of Old Capital Kiwanis Club and served as its treasurer for many years. Leland was a long time member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and served the church in many ways including as treasurer and a member of the Board of Trustees. He was also active in the Iowa City Chapter of Young Life for many years and served on the board of directors for them.
Leland loved to travel and enjoyed playing golf and bowling. He served as secretary-treasurer of his bowling league for more than 35 years. He was an avid Hawkeye fan and worked for many years serving meals to the media at Hawkeye football and basketball games. He enjoyed watching his children’s many activities and never missed an opportunity to watch a sporting event, piano recital or to go on a Boy Scout camping trip. He continued this support as his grandchildren participated in their many activities.
Leland is survived by his wife Barbara and 2 children: Dean (Tonya) McCORMICK of Ames and Carol (Tom) KRISTENSEN of Ankeny, 4 grandchildren: Shannon and Patrick McCORMICK and Stephanie and Matthew KRISTENSEN. He is also survived by a brother: Virgil (Louisa) McCORMICK of Coal Valley, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother: Bernard McCORMICK and 1 sister: Iona BARKER.
Graveside Inurnment will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield, with Rev. Medea Saunders officiating. Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 3:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Iowa City. A visitation will follow from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Contributions can be sent to 2675 E. Washington St. Iowa City, Iowa 52245.
