Funeral for Former Football Captain Here On Saturday
Harry M. JOHNSON, better known here as 'Jay' JOHNSON, a former captain of the Fairfield High School football team, died in the Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids, yesterday following an operation for the removal of his appendix.
JOHNSON was 28 years old, the son of Mr. and Mrs. August JOHNSON, residents of Cedar Rapids. He is survived by his parents, three sisters, Mabel, Grace, and Mrs. Ward GUSTISON all of the state of Washington; and one brother.
JOHNSON had undergone an emergency operation for the removal of his appendix a week ago Tuesday. The appendix had ruptured. He lived until the following Tuesday.
It so happened that his mother, Mrs. August JOHNSON, had fallen a short time before and received a broken ankle. Her two sisters Vin LOUDER, and Mrs. William TEETER both of Fairfield, had gone to Cedar Rapids to be with her and were there at the time of their nephew's death. 'Jay' had made his home with his aunt Vin LOUDER, when he was attending school in Fairfield. His uncle Oscar 'Ole' JOHNSON also went to Cedar Rapids.
JOHNSON was graduated from the Fairfield High school with the class of 1926, and played football for four years having served as captain his senior year. He also played basketball for three years and was a member of the track team for two years. He was well known in this part of the state as an outstanding athlete.
Short funeral services will be held in Cedar Rapids tomorrow and the body will then be brought to the Hoskins funeral home in Fairfield. Funeral services will be held here at the Hoskins home Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Antioch cemetery.

Note: Although his obituary indicates he was buried in Antioch Cemetery, we have no record of him there. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, in Lot 2nd.255. It is not known as of the time of this posting if he was removed from Antioch and reinterred in Evergreen, or if he was initially buried at Evergreen and the obituary noted Antioch by mistake; two of his LOUDEN relatives were at one time buried at Antioch and moved to Evergreen, and that could be the case with Jay.
