Francis L. PICKERING

Francis L. PICKERING, 73, of Pleasant Plain, died at 12;40 p.m. Sunday, July 10, 2011, at Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Wellman.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Church of God in Brighton, with the Rev. Ryan Meader officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Plain Friends Cemetery.

Family visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be left at the church or may be mailed to the family at 2702 115th Street, Brighton 52540.

Mr. PICKERING was born Nov. 11, 1927, in Pleasant Plain, the son of Cloyce W. and Beulah M. WOLFE PICKERING. He married Sharon ARMSTRONG June 23, 1963, in Brighton. She died July 6, 1999.

Mr. PICKERING grew up in Pleasant Plain and graduated from Pleasant Plain Academy in 1956. He lived most of his adult life in East Pleasant Plain. He worked for Keating Manufacturing in Washington, Iowa, and owned and operated his own welding shop for many years. He most recently worked at the Washington YMCA.

Mr. PICKERING served in the United States Navy from 1957-1961.

He was a member of First Church of God in Brighton and served on the board of directors for many years. He also was a member of American Legion Post No. 29 in Washington, Tin Can Sailors and F-Troop.

Survivors include three children: Thomas PICKERING and wife Susan of Pleasant Plain, Jesse Chris PICKERING of Pleasant Plain and Mark PICKERING of Mount Pleasant; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother: Lonnie PICKERING of Wayland; and two sisters: Kay WHITAKER and Debbie DUNBAR, both of Pleasant Plain.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
