Kathryn R. SCHAFER

Kathryn R. SCHAFER, 88, of the Kilbourne community, drowned in the Des Moines River. Her body was discovered in the river at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2011, at Fox Island, upstream from Keosauqua.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Stephen C. Page officiating. The body has been cremated. Private burial of cremains will follow in Kilbourne Cemetery.

Family visitation will be 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to Kilbourne Cemetery may be left at the fuenral home or may be mailed to the family at 16746 Hawk Drive, Birmingham 52535.

Mrs. SCHAFER was born Aug. 1, 1922, near Kilbourne, the daughter of Nelson and Ruth STEELE RAMSEY. She married Charles H. SCHAFER Jr. Oct. 20, 1943, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield. He died Dec. 31, 2009.

The SCHAFERs farmed near Kilbourne and spent 37 winters in the South.

Mrs. SCHAFER was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Van Buren County Farm Bureau. She was a former member of Des Moines Valley Rocks & Relics Club and Isaac Walton League.

Mrs. SCHAFER was a licensed ham radio operator and liked to fish in the Des Moines River and Gulf of Mexico.

Survivors include two sons, Joe SCHAFER and wife Beverly of Downers Grove, Ill., and Roger SCHAFER and wife Jerri of rural Birmingham; three grandchildren; two stepgrandsons; two great-grandsons; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson; two brothers, Charles and Burr RAMSEY; and two sisters, Evelyn GILBERT and Beulah MORROW.

Body of missing Birmingham woman found

The body of Kathryn Ruth SCHAFER, 88, of the Kilbourne community southwest of Birmingham, was found at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Des Moines River at Fox Island upstream from Keosauqua.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30-11 a.m. prior to the service.

Private burial of cremains will follow the service in Kilbourne Cemetery.

A complete obituary is on page 8 today.

SCHAFER was reported missing early Tuesday, and her vehicle was located near a Des Moines River boat ramp. An autopsy was performed by the Iowa State Medical Examiner in Ankeny.
