SCHAFER, Charles H. -- Charles H. SCHAFER Jr., 90, of rural Birmingham, died at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at his home in the Kilbourne community southwest of Birmingham.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Bernie Weir officiating. The body has been cremated. Private burial of the cremains will follow the service.

Family visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the St. Mary Catholic Church building fund or Kilbourne Cemetery may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 16616 Hawk Drive, Birmingham 52535.

Mr. SCHAFER was born May 4, 1919, in Stuart, the son of Charles H. and Catherine HAWKINS SCHAFER. He married Kathryn RAMSEY Oct. 20, 1943, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield.

As a boy, Mr. SCHAFER lived in Valley Junction until moving with his parents to Van Buren County, where he graduated from Douds-Leando High School in 1939. He farmed near Kilbourne, first with his father and later with his son Roger. He and his wife spent 20 winters in south Texas.

Mr. SCHAFER served in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He had served on the Kilbourne school board and been a member of Izaak Walton League.

Mr. SCHAFER enjoyed hunting, fishing and rock hounding. He had been a licensed amateur radio operator since 1939.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Joe SCHAFER and wife Beverly of Downers Grove, Ill., and Roger SCHAFER and wife Jerri of rural Birmingham; three grandchildren; two stepgrandsons; and three stepgreat-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.
