Dorothy L. ALLENDER

Dorothy L. ALLENDER of Fountain West Care Center in West Des Moines died at 3 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Hamilton Funeral Home in Des Moines. Memorials may be made to Central Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.

Mrs. ALLENDER was born Oct. 5, 1914, in Ottumwa, the daughter of Joseph and Helen BROWN EMERSON. She married George ALLENDER.

She grew up and was educated in the Ottumwa and Salina areas. She graduated from Fairfield High School.

She worked for the Fairfield Ledger as a proofreader and bookkeeper for 26 years. She moved to Des Moines in 1970 and worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for eight years before retiring.

She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.

Survivors include one son, Max Wayne ALLENDER of Des Moines; one grandson; two brothers, Max EMERSON of Fairfield and Edwin EMERSON of Knoxville; and one sister, Maxine HUMPHREYS of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia STECKEL of Kansas City, Mo., and an infant, Ruth.
