The following is transcribed by Richard K Thompson from microfilm records of the Fairfield Daily Ledger on file at the Fairfield Public library, Fairfield, Iowa. It should be noted that during this time of war there were numerous major battles going on in Europe and in the pacific area. That it took several weeks from the time of death to notification of the wife, and posting in the Fairfield Daily Ledger (or other newspapers, for that matter) was not uncommon. It is hoped that this transcription will serve to preserve the memory of Jasper Cook to his family:

Pvt. COOK Is Killed

Pvt. Jasper COOK, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy COOK of west of town, has been officially reported as killed in action February 18 in France, according to a telegram from the war department, received by his wife, the former Annabell HAGANS, who is making her home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John HAGANS of west of town.

Pvt. COOK, who landed overseas with an infantry division around February 4, last wrote his wife, dated February 16, stating he had been assigned to the 7th army.

He is survived by his parents, his wife and three children, Nancy Louisa, 4, Howard LeRoy, 2, and Larry Merle, 5 months; two brothers, Pvt. Donald COOK, enroute overseas with an engineer unit, and John in grade school; two sisters, Mrs. Morris CRIST and Willoughby COOK, a junior in the local high school; two half sisters, Velma ORMS and Frances ANDERSON; and one half-brother, Dale COX.

He saw his baby son for a short time when home on a delay enroute at New Year's before going to Fort Meade, Md. and overseas. He was employed at Louden's prior to his leaving with a Jefferson county group of selectees in September 1944. He took his basic at Jefferson Barracks. He was a member of the local national guard unit.

Special note: According to military records posted on Ancestry.com, Pvt. Jasper L COOK served in the 274th Inf. 70 Div.

He was later awarded the Purple Heart.

Jasper was born on August 17, 1921 to Roy Raymond COOK and Nellie J COOK. He died while parachuting over France on February 18, 1945. He was and remains buried at Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal, Vosges. Lorraine Region, France. His FindAGrave memorial is #56371758.

His parents and wife are buried in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. His wife subsequently remarried and is buried under the "HOUSTON" surname (Mrs. Bryan HOUSTON).
