J. W. ENGSTRAND Dies Following Long Illness

John William ENGSTRAND, 83, died this morning at 7:05 at Jefferson county hospital where he had been a patient two weeks. He had been in failing health for two years.

Mr. ENGSTRAND was born May 24, 1870, in Varna, Ill., the son of Andrew P. and Johanna Sophia KORE ENGSTRAND. He spent his early life in Varna and was confirmed May 24, 1885, in the Varna Lutheran church. He married Ellen SWANSON in Varna Dec. 21, 1892, and the couple lived there until 1895 when they moved to a farm near Salina. In 1909 they moved to a farm northeast of Fairfield where they lived until Mrs. ENGSTRAND's death May 6, 1937.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Glenn BATES (sic. Glen BATES; Hattie was her given name), a granddaughter, Mrs. Edna LEE, and a grandson, Robert ENGSTRAND, all of Fairfield and three great-grandchildren. Also two sisters, Mrs. Ellen HOUGER and Mrs. Eva MUNSON, Akron, O., and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a son, Harry William, who died Sept. 21, 1937, and two brothers and seven sisters.

Funeral services will be held at the Fairfield Lutheran church Wednesday at 2 p.m. The body is at the Omar Hoskins funeral home at Brighton where it will remain until noon Wednesday when it will be taken to the Lutheran church. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Ledger obituary for the wife, Ellen SWANSON ENGSTRAND, who died on May 6, 1937, but did not find anything published that was scanned in the microfilm records on file at the Fairfield Public Library.
