SOLOMON GAUMER DIED EARLY TODAY

Funeral Arrangements Awaiting Word From Relatives At A Distance

Solomon GAUMER, a long time resident of this county, passed away this morning about 4:30 at the Jefferson County hospital.

He was born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, January 4, 1841 (sic. 1842 is engraved on his headstone inscription), and came to Iowa in an early day. He was married October 5, 1871 to Annie Mary STEWART who passed away September 7, 1929. He was the father of the following children: Dr. J. S. GAUMER of this city; J.E. GAUMER Denver Colo., Dr. (sic. first initial ?? in microfilm image) R. GAUMER, Galesburg, Ill., Mrs. Ernest BRENIMAN, Brooklyn, Ia., Miss Bessie GAUMER of this city, Chas. C. GAUMER, East Moline, Ill., and Hugh D. GAUMER, San Francisco, Calif. One son, Archie W. GAUMER, passed away July 21, 1920. Since 1873 he had lived continuously in Center township until 1910, when the family moved to Fairfield.

On December 1, 1916 he was stricken with paralysis which left him a helpless invalid. For one and one-half years following this he was cared for at his home, but since June 1 ,1918 he has been a patient at the Jefferson County hospital having been cared for there longer than any other patient who has over been in the hospital. During all of this thime he has retained his mental faculties, always knew his old friends and was interested in all that was going on about him. He has been a great sufferer and death has come as a welcome release after long months of anguish and pain.

Mr. GAUMER was a man of quiet character who never aspired to public notice, was a kind father and a good neighbor.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later upon recipt of a message from relatives from a distance.

* Transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not related to the person(s) mentioned. Transcribed despite Solomon's obituary notation that he did not seek public notice, but transcribed with respect for the Gaumer family that went on to have an important role in Fairfield's cultural and professional heritage. This contributor knew one descendant, Stewart Corey GAUMER, socially for a time; the seed money for the children's playground on the south side of Fairfield came about from memorial funds following the untimely death of Matthew James GAUMER in 1999 at the age of 28. That playground was built using volunteers from the Fairfield community, and this contributor participated in the building of that playground, which is still used by many young children.

Note: Buried in Evergreen cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. Old.P.185
