DEATH OF G. M. CHILCOTT.

George Miles CHILCOTT, a man who was identified with the earlier history and politics of Jefferson County, died in St. Louis Friday (sic - March 6th) from rheumatism and Bright's disease. Mr. CHILCOTT was a native of Huntingdon County, Penn., and came to this county with his parents in 1844. He worked on a farm in summer and taught school in the winter, the senior editor of the Ledger being one of his pupils. In 1853, as G.I.M. CHILCOTT, he was nominated by the Whigs for sheriff, was elected and served one term. In printing the tickets, a printer for The Ledger office omitted the initial "I." and Mr. C. never afterward used it in writing his name. When his official term expired, CHILCOTT and James F. Crawford purchased the general merchandise store of Joel E. Campbell in this city and were together for nearly a year. Then the stock was divided and Mr. CHILCOTT removed his half to Burt County, Neb., to engage in trade with the Indians. He went into politics again in Burt County, and was elected to the territorial legislature. In 1859 Mr. CHILCOTT again turned his face westward and located at Denver. He went into political life again and was elected a member of the constitutional convention which attempted the organization of the new state of Jefferson, from Arapahoe county. Removing afterward to Pueblo, where he has since made his home, he was appointed receiver of the land office by President Lincoln in 1863. He was elected a member of the first and second territorial legislatures of Colorado and was chosen a delegate to congress in 1865, but was not given his seat. In 1866 he was chosen again and was admitted and served one term in congress. He was elected to the state legislature in 1868, and was out of public life from that time until April, 1882, when he was appointed United States Senator from Colorado to succeed Henry M. Teller, who resigned the senatorship to accept the secretaryship of the Treasury under President Arthur. Mr. CHILCOTT made little contest to retain the place in the Senate and was succeeded by Thomas M. Bowen. Of late years he has been in ill health much of the time, and has led a retired life.

Mr. CHILCOTT was a brother of Thomas, Reuben and Ethan CHILCOTT, all of whom formerly resided near Salina, this county, and Mrs. Dr. DEAN of Batavia, Mrs. Waltus COLLINS and Mrs. Geo. N. PARK of Lockridge township were sisters. His wife died about a year ago and two sons and a daughter survive him. Mr. CHILCOTT's life was an eventful one, and he has been identified with the politics of three states in no small measure. He left the impress of his wisdom on the legislation of the new state of Colorado and his death will be sincerely mourned in that commonwealth.
