Pg. 6 Col. 4Death of an Aged Man
Phlauris (sic. a/k/a Phalarus) E. BLACK, a resident of Jefferson county since 1869, died very suddenly at the home of a son, B. F. BLACK, in this city Saturday evening, from an affection of the heart. He had suffered from the infirmities of age for some time, being almost blind and deaf, and for several days before his death had been ill from an attack of erysipelas. Mr. BLACK was born in Greene county, Penn., October 19th, 1820, and attained his majority there. He was married to Miss Margaret REITZ at Greensburgh in 1842, the wife dying in this city in 1897. They were the parents of eight children, only three of whom are now living -- B. F. (sic. Benjamin Franklin), in this city, Thomas R. at Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mrs. S. L. FOGLEMAN at Parsons, Kan. During his more active years Mr. BLACK lived on a farm in Blackhawk township northwest of this city, and was one of the noted horse breeders of the county. He was a man of excellent character, a member of the Methodist Episcopal church since his twenty-first year, a generous neighbor and a good citizen. Funeral services were held in this city Monday, conducted by Rev. Thos. Osborn, assisted by Rev. A.R. Adams.
