Marjorie "Marj" RICE, 91, of Holstein, died Sunday, April 24, 2011, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church of Holstein, with the Rev. Jerry R. Miller officiating. Burial will be at Holstein Cemetery of Holstein.
Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein, with the family present from 6-8 p.m.
Mrs. RICE was born Nov. 27, 1919, at Ida Grove Hospital, the daughter of George Sr. and Fannie Mae SHELDON HOFFMAN. She married Oscar RICE Oct. 14, 1945. He preceded her in death in 2005.
Mrs. RICE received her elementary education in Logan 9 Country School and graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1937. Through high school, she especially enjoyed 4-H and the county fair. She showed cattle at the county fair, AK-SAR-BEN in Omaha and International Baby Beef Show in Sioux City. The RICEs operated the family farm -- which was named a Century Farm and received the Izaak Walton League Windbreak award in 1993 -- until retirement in 1971. Following retirement from farming, the couple and Mrs. RICE's twin sister operated MOM's Painting until retiring in 1995.
Mrs. RICE was a member of Holstein United Methodist Church and a 60-plus year member of American Legion Auxiliary.
Mrs. RICE enjoyed the fair and entered the twin contest at the state fair with her sister three times, winning first place twice. In retirement, Mrs. RICE enjoyed traveling with family, golfing and playing 500. She also enjoyed supporting the school district by attending school functions.
Survivors include five sons, Roy and wife Sharon, Raymond and wife Kathy, Kent and wife Kathy of Fairfield, Ron and wife Kathy and Don and wife Janet; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, George HOFFMAN; and one sister, Barb FINCH.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Sarah HOLST, twin Margaret NICHOLSON and Ruth ROHLF; and one daughter-in-law, Beverly RICE.
